Of course drugs were fun.
— Anjelica Huston
ANJELICA HUSTON grew up on her father's (director John Huston) Ireland estate after her parents divorced, and she first appeared in front of the camera in two of her father's films: Sinful Davey and A Walk With Love and Death. When her mother, a ballerina, was killed in a tragic car accident when Huston was 18, she gave up the screen and moved to New York. Tall and striking, she modeled for Vogue and eventually took up Beverly Hills housekeeping with that paradigm of stability, Jack Nicholson. At 33, Huston's theatrical genes kicked in, and she snagged the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Prizzi's Honor. In 1987, she appeared in her father's final film, The Dead. Her assured, complex performances have been rewarded with more Oscar nominations—for Enemies: A Love Story and The Grifters. Her 17 years with Nicholson ended in 1990, when he became the father of a younger woman's baby. Huston landed on her feet, marrying world-renowned sculptor Robert Graham (his pieces sell for more than most people make in a year). Huston co-starred opposite her former lover in Sean Penn's The Crossing Guard, and it seemed like the chemistry was still there—both she and Nicholson received excellent reviews. The following year, Huston stepped behind the camera to direct a TV adaptation of the Dorothy Allison novel Bastard Out of Carolina. In 1999, she took the helm for her first feature film, Agnes Browne, which she also produced and starred in (only after first-choice actress Rosie O'Donnell walked away from the title role a few weeks before filming was scheduled to begin). Based on Brendan O'Carroll's critically praised novel The Mammy, the film tells the story of a plucky Irish widow who struggles to make ends meet while raising seven children.
